Mark 10:7-9
‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
Life Lesson
Today’s word (Word Of Reflection Daily) begins after Jesus leaves Capernaum for Judea in an area east of the Jordan River. While teaching a crowd, Pharisees attempt to trap him with a question on divorce. In Verse 2 they ask “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?” It is here wherein Jesus talks about the joining of two into one in marriage. Genesis 2:21-22 says, “…While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.” And then Genesis 2:24 reaffirms Jesus’ reply by saying, “This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”
In pondering over these passages many thoughts easily come to mind and heart having gone through divorce myself. So many that I believe it is best to share more meaningful ones and to also combine them as today’s take aways.
First, God never intended divorce. In His eyes marriage was, is and should be a covenant. Merriam Webster defines covenant as “a usually formal, solemn and binding agreement.” In other words, marriage is intended for the long haul. A life time commitment, not to be taken for granted or as simple a promise to be broken at will. Malachi 2:14 reaffirms this by saying “It is because the LORD is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. Second, God hates divorce! Malachi 2:16 says “I hate divorce,” says the LORD God of Israel…” While we see what I refer to as escape clauses in the bible, such as for marital unfaithfulness mentioned in Matthew 5:32, God hates divorce still. Third, marriage is much more than joining of hands, sharing a kiss or exchanging vows during a wedding ceremony. It is joining of two into one. It is forming of and combining flesh and spirit into a single unit. Malachi 2:15 says “Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his…” Fourth, divorce is very painful. The pain you feel deep within your heart is the result of actual tearing of spirit, flesh and heart that became one in marriage. I can personally attest to this pain! Lastly, (and most importantly) complete healing from the tearing of what was joined together by God can only from and through Jesus Christ. Again, I attest to this! Having been involved in divorce care ministry, first as a participant and later as a co-facilitator, all who healed or healed quicker (myself included) were those that had a real, intimate, obeying and submissive relationship with the Lord. It is therefore my hope and prayer that many more people will pursue divorce prevention rather than find themselves going down the wrong path having to seek divorce recovery instead.

I have just published a book on divorce recovery called “Yes, There Is an Upside of Divorce, It Can Be Your Second Chance at Life!” You can search “upside of divorce” on Amazon and read the great reviews I have there.
My book discusses my own divorce and helps my readers get through the most common and difficult downsides so that they can then “see” the many more UPSIDES there are in their divorce or separation. My book spends most of its chapters on the positive ways to move on to a happier and more enjoyable rest-of-life.
