Luke 8:5
“A farmer went out to plant his seed. As he scattered it across his field, some seed fell on a footpath, where it was stepped on, and the birds ate it.
Life Lesson
Today’s word is a parable or principle that illustrates a farmer scattering seed across his field. The seed is God’s word, with various types of paths it falls on, representing different kinds of people. Success of planting or crop yield, in the parable and likewise in real life, depends on soil condition or the path where seeds happen to land. It is most likely not because of any failing by or fault of the farmer nor because of defect in the seed.
In meditating over today’s passage the one thought which comes to mind is spreading seed is like fishing. And in fishing terms, I guess one could say it is similar to the old adage…to increase potential to catch (fish) more abundantly, place more lines and hooks in the water. If you know fishing, this adage also implies that more lines, the best bait or the most expensive lures doesn’t always guarantee fish nor more fish. It simply gives fishermen an advantage. A higher probability of success (catching more).
Hence today, my take away is to spread seed (God’s Word) and share the Good News whether yield is plentiful or lacking. And should my effort of scattering seed fall on not-so-good soil or fishing be in a not-so-productive area, to remind myself to persevere. To not give up. Success just might be around the corner! And furthermore, to remember to remain forever faithful in hope of one day being able to know in my heart what 2 Timothy 4:7 says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.”
